AUTHOR, AUTHOR

50 images of famous writers, screen writers, playwrights and poets.

Click here for a complete list of authors included in this exhibition.

Childers is known for his fine art photographs of legendary movie stars, artists and other iconic luminaries that first graced the cover of Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine and After Dark Magazine. As founding photographer for that publication, Childers guided it to its place as a unique documentation of his life’s personal friends during his many years in Hollywood, a time he shared with his life partner, the late director John Schlesinger.

Childers has always presented legendary and revealing images of great cultural figures but what makes AUTHOR, AUTHOR so rare, is the fact that writers typically become known for their work and not themselves. The literary star tends to let the written prose speak for itself, elevating the work into the spotlight, while the writer stays rather anonymous in light of the lens. Childers has managed to cultivate a seminal collection of portraits from the likes of Ray Bradbury and Tennessee Williams to contemporary writers like Gore Vidal, John Guare, Edward Albee, Oliver Stone, Michael Cunningham and Christopher Rice, exposing the enigmatic personae of those who have contributed greatly to our annals of the written word.

The poster and brochure for AUTHOR AUTHOR received the prestigious American Library Association award to the best graphics and art direction of 2011.

AUTHOR AUTHOR has been shown in Rancho Mirage, California, San Francisco, West Hollywood, Minneapolis and the Chicago Public Library
